Sky Space

Sky Space is a two level structure created by James Turrell. This Quaker artist is known for his light installations all over the world. This one is on the Rice University campus in Houston, Texas.
Light, references the divine and all aspects of his work focus on light. In this fascinating structure, there is seating on both levels with the focal point in the center of the ceiling that is a square hole. Sky Space is a functional work of art open to the public everyday at sunrise and sunset. When visiting the structure, the viewer cannot help but stare upward towards the hole in the ceiling. There is a quiet that falls on the surrounding area at these designated times of day and the lighting changes as you watch the sunset.
